The hurricane, named Idalia, is an unprecedented event according to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee. It is the most powerful storm to hit Florida’s Big Bend in over 125 years, leading to evacuation orders affecting tens of thousands of people.
Idalia had initially reached a staggering speed of 156 mph as a Category 4 storm in the Gulf of Mexico before making landfall. However, it has since weakened due to an eyewall replacement cycle. The National Hurricane Center explained that despite the decrease in wind speed, the threat of catastrophic storm surge and damaging winds remains. The storm surge could potentially reach 12-16 feet.
During a press conference in Tallahassee, Governor Ron DeSantis emphasized the far-reaching impacts of the hurricane, including 11 tornado warnings already issued in the area. He urged people to prioritize their safety and not take any unnecessary risks. “This thing’s powerful. If you’re inside, just hunker down until it gets past,” the governor advised.
