1100 Migrants Cross Del Rio Texas Border in 5 Hours

Agents from Del Rio Sector Border Patrol apprehended over 1,100 migrants in five hours Tuesday morning. The border area south of Eagle Pass was the location of the apprehensions. The agents apprehended over 400 persons in one group.

Agents apprehended about 1,000 migrants who crossed the border to the U.S. from Piedras Negras (Mexico) between 2 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. Tuesday morning according to a source under U.S. Customs and Border Protection. According to the source, the largest group was more than 400 migrants who crossed the border at the same moment.

Agents also apprehended more 200 migrants in a single group farther north, but still on Eagle Pass’s south side.

Sources claimed that the majority of migrants consisted of Cuban migrants. There were also migrants from Nicaragua and Ecuador in the group.

The large migrant group tactic is used by human smugglers to tie up Border Patrol resources and make it difficult for them to move people across the border. This enables them to move drugs and other high-value human cargo” across the border with less chance of being apprehended. According to a source, agents had to be on duty for close 12 hours due the large numbers of people who crossed during the night hours. Other resources needed to be called in quickly.

Chief Patrol Agent Jason D. Owens has previously tweeted that the Del Rio Sector leads the nation when it comes to large migrant group arrests.
