12% of Americans consume 50% of U.S. beef, reveals study.
Only 12% of Americans Consume Half of the Daily Meat
Prepare to be amazed by this mind-blowing statistic: Recent research reveals that a mere 12% of the U.S. population is responsible for a whopping 50% of all meat consumed in the country on a daily basis. And guess who makes up the majority of this group? Men aged 50 to 65.
The Battle Against Meat Consumption
Published in the journal ”Nutrients,” this study aims to support educational efforts on the dangers of meat consumption, particularly for the environment. The researchers want to convince you to give up meat in order to combat climate change.
Diego Rose, the corresponding and senior author of the study, who is a professor and nutrition program director at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, emphasized the environmental impact and health risks associated with beef consumption. He stated, “We focused on beef because of its impact on the environment, and because it’s high in saturated fat, which is not good for your health.”
According to the New York Post, Americans consumed approximately 30 billion pounds of beef in 2021. The study’s authors anticipate challenges in persuading the 12% to change their meat-eating habits.
Rose acknowledged the potential impact of getting the 12% on board, saying, “On one hand, if it’s only 12% accounting for half the beef consumption, you could make some big gains if you get those 12% on board. On the other hand, those 12% may be most resistant to change.”
The Cultural Influence on Meat Consumption
Interestingly, the study’s authors speculate that cultural norms play a role in men’s higher consumption of red meat, rather than simply the taste.
“This may be because meat, especially red meat, is associated with masculinity, strength, and power in Western culture,” they added.
One can’t help but wonder if the authors bothered to ask any red-blooded American males why they enjoy eating meat. The answer is quite obvious: It’s simply delicious.

The Sacrifice for Climate Change
To reiterate, this study aims to convince you to give up your beloved ribeyes and beef hamburgers in the fight against global warming.
But here’s a proposition: How about we make a trade-off? We’ll consider giving up all that glorious food when John Kerry, Al Gore, and every other climate warrior give up their reliance on fossil fuels.
Deal?
