13 Presidential Centers Unite to Promote ‘Democracy Principles’

The Presidential Centers Unite to Address the State of American Democracy

In a ‍historic move,‍ the ⁤presidential centers‌ of thirteen ex-presidents have come together to issue⁤ a rare joint ⁤statement on⁣ the state of⁣ American democracy. This statement, released ⁤on Thursday, emphasizes the need for “compassion, tolerance, pluralism, and respect” in the political arena.

With signatories ranging from the foundation of former President Herbert Hoover to Barack Obama, ⁣the statement outlines the core values of the United⁣ States and underscores⁤ the ‌importance of its institutions. It also reaffirms each foundation’s commitment to the principles of democracy. This⁣ is a groundbreaking moment,⁤ as it marks the⁤ first time ‌presidential libraries have joined⁣ forces to make a statement ⁢of this nature, as reported by the Associated Press.

“As a⁣ diverse nation of people with different backgrounds and beliefs, democracy holds us together,” the statement ‌declares. “We are a country rooted in the ‌rule of law, ⁤where the protection‌ of the rights ⁤of all people is paramount. At the same time, we live among our fellow citizens, underscoring the importance of⁢ compassion, tolerance, pluralism, and respect for others.”

Titled “Strengthening our democracy,” the message acknowledges that⁢ the United States has ⁤not always lived up to its stated ideals.⁣ However, it highlights how the pursuit of “life, liberty, ‌and the pursuit‍ of happiness” has propelled the ‍country towards a “more perfect union.” The signatories represent a diverse cross-section of the American people and believe that differing views can coexist peacefully when ‍rooted in the principles of democracy.

“Debate and disagreement ‌are central features in a healthy democracy,” the statement continues. “Civility and respect in political discourse, ⁣whether in an election year or ‍otherwise, ‌are essential.”

Regarding the current state of American democracy, the statement suggests that the country is currently a “house in disarray,” ⁤which undermines its ability to support democracy and human rights abroad. The signatories emphasize the urgency of addressing these issues, stating that⁤ the world cannot wait ⁢for the⁢ United States ⁢to resolve its problems. ‌They believe‍ that ‍effective governance and delivering ‍for the ⁢American⁣ people ⁣will help‍ restore trust in public service and provide leadership on ⁣the global stage.

The signatories ⁣include the foundations, libraries, or organizations⁣ connected to former Presidents Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George‍ H.W. Bush, Ronald ⁢Reagan,⁢ Jimmy Carter,⁢ Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, Lyndon⁢ Johnson, John F. Kennedy, Harry Truman, Franklin D.⁤ Roosevelt, and Hoover.

The joint statement ‍was reportedly organized by the George W. Bush ‌Institute’s ‍executive director, David Kramer, a former Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor under George W. Bush. Kramer, who‍ signed off on⁢ the letter himself, gained notoriety ⁢for leaking the infamous Steele Dossier to Buzzfeed News ‌in an alleged attempt‍ to prevent former President Donald Trump’s 2017 ‌inauguration, according to a report from‌ the Daily Caller. The dossier, funded by the ⁤Clinton campaign ⁤for opposition research, contained unfounded rumors and innuendo about‍ Trump and was used by the FBI ‌to obtain ⁣warrants to surveil his 2016 campaign.

The Eisenhower Foundation ⁣respectfully declined to sign the statement, stating ‍that there had⁢ been no collective discussion about it and only an invitation to sign. It remains unclear‌ if ⁤anyone⁤ from‌ Trump’s team was approached to sign the ⁤letter. While there is a ‍ website for Trump’s presidential library, he has not ‌yet established a physical location or announced plans for one.
