Teen Arrested in Connection with Fatal Shooting in South Carolina
A 14-year-old suspect has been taken into custody in connection with a tragic shooting incident that occurred over the weekend in the capital city of South Carolina. The incident, which stemmed from a long-standing dispute, resulted in the deaths of three teenagers and left another injured.
The Richland County Sheriff’s Department has charged the 14-year-old, along with two 17-year-old suspects, with three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. While the older boys will be tried as adults, a decision on whether the 14-year-old will be tried in juvenile court will be made by a judge.
The shooting took place outside an abandoned house on Sunday afternoon, where two individuals opened fire. The victims included three students from Eau Claire High School, aged between 16 and 17, who tragically lost their lives. Another 14-year-old, who attended the same middle school as the lone survivor, was also injured in the incident.
Authorities responded to the shooting incident in Columbia on Sunday afternoon. According to a redacted incident report, the shooters pursued the victims and continued firing as they fled towards the backyard. The incident is believed to be the result of an ongoing dispute that began two years ago with a burglary.
While the specific level of involvement for each suspect has not been disclosed, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department considers all three individuals arrested to be “culpable” and acting in concert, as stated by Deputy Veronica Hill, a public information officer for the department.
Tragically, the three high school students succumbed to their injuries at the hospital, while the middle school student has been released after receiving medical treatment.
