2.5 tons of uranium missing in Libya, UN nuclear watchdog agency says
TThe United Nations nuclear watchdog informed member states Wednesday that it is looking for 2.5 tons of radioactive uranium missing from a Libyan site. This raises concerns about nuclear proliferation and safety.
Rafael Grossi, Director General of International Atomic Energy Agency, said that the missing uranium had been discovered by agency inspectors during a routine inspection at the site on Tuesday.
He said that the inspection was originally planned to take place in 2013 but was delayed due to security concerns in the area.
IAEA inspectors visited the site to inspect it. “found that 10 drums containing approximately 2.5 tons of natural uranium in the form of UOC [uranium ore concentrate] were not present as previously declared at a location in the state of Libya,” Grossi stated in a statement that was reported by Reuters.

Although it is not clear if the original site was found, inspectors observed that it was stored on a site that was not under government control and that access was required. “complex logistics.”
The agency stated that the lack of information about uranium could present a radiological threat and raise nuclear security concerns.
Natural uranium cannot be used immediately for energy production or as bomb fuel. To make it a weapon, you will need to use a complex enrichment process that includes gas diffusion and centrifugation.
Experts warn that uranium could still be obtained by groups with the right resources and means to make 12 pounds of weapons-grade material.
