Former Baseball Player Arrested in Connection to Lake Tahoe Attack
ROSEVILLE, Calif.—In a shocking turn of events, police have apprehended two individuals, including a former professional baseball player, in connection to a brutal attack near Lake Tahoe. The incident resulted in the death of a man and left his wife in critical condition.
After an extensive two-year investigation, authorities arrested Danny Serafini, 49, and Samantha Scott, 33, in separate locations hundreds of miles apart. Serafini was apprehended in Las Vegas, while Scott was arrested northwest of Reno. It is believed that they were acquainted with the victims, Robert Gary Spohr and his wife, Wendy Wood.
The tragic incident occurred at the couple’s home in an unincorporated community in California, situated by the picturesque Lake Tahoe. Robert Spohr, 70, lost his life in the attack, while Wendy Wood miraculously survived, although she remained in critical condition.
The suspects will be extradited to California to face charges, according to officials.
Placer County Sheriff Wayne Woo expressed his satisfaction with the arrests, stating, “Today, justice was served. The apprehension of those responsible for the tragic events that unfolded in Homewood, North Lake Tahoe in 2021 stands as a testament to the unwavering dedication of our detectives, law enforcement partners, and the persistence of our pursuit of truth.”
Danny Serafini, represented by attorney David Fischer, has yet to comment on the arrest. Serafini, a former MLB pitcher drafted in 1992, enjoyed an 11-year career with multiple teams, as reported by the Sacramento Bee.
As for Samantha Scott, it is unclear whether she has legal representation. The Clark County Public Defender’s Office did not respond to inquiries. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office also stated that they have no information regarding her representation.
Police revealed that video surveillance from the victims’ home captured a man wearing a gray hoodie, face covering, and backpack approaching the residence hours before the attack. Another video shows the same individual walking up the driveway.
Deputies were alerted to the incident through a 911 call and arrived at the scene promptly. They discovered that Robert Spohr had been shot once, while Wendy Wood sustained at least two gunshot wounds. Although Wendy Wood initially survived her injuries, she tragically passed away a year later.
