Tragic Shooting in Burnsville, Minnesota: Heroes Lost
In the early hours of Sunday morning, tragedy struck in Burnsville, Minnesota, as two brave police officers and a paramedic were shot and killed. The suspect responsible for the shooting was also killed during the ensuing shootout.
Officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge responded to a distress call at a private home around 2 a.m. Later, firefighter/paramedic Adam Finseth arrived at the scene. Unfortunately, gunfire erupted, resulting in the loss of all three lives. Shockingly, seven children between the ages of 2 to 15 were trapped inside the home with the suspect, as reported by CBS News.
According to Superintendent Drew Evans with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the police had spent a significant amount of time negotiating with the suspect. Sergeant Adam Medlicott was also shot but is expected to survive. At 8 a.m, the suspect was reported dead.
“Several officers did return fire,” Evans revealed. “I will note this individual had several guns and large amounts of ammunition.”
Burnsville Police Chief Tanya Schwartz expressed her grief, stating, “Today, three members of our team made the ultimate sacrifice for this community. They are heroes. Every day we pray that they go home to their families. And today that’s not happening. We’re heartbroken. We are going to need time to be together. Our families need time to grieve.”
Cindy Elmstrand-Castruita, the wife of Officer Elmstrand, shared her devastation, saying, “He was the most generous, loving, patient person I’ve ever known. He could have a conversation with anyone and make them feel seen. He would drop everything to help someone who was in need, whether it be family, friend, or someone on the street.”
“He was a very levelheaded person,” she continued. “He loved his job. He saw horrible things but never once did he come home complaining.”

On that fateful Sunday morning, before receiving the devastating news of her husband’s death, Cindy received a text expressing sorrow. Initially, she thought it was a mistake, but when she looked out her bedroom window and saw a squad car, she knew the truth. Her beloved husband was gone.
“I think he just had to be the hero. He had to do what he thought was right to protect those little lives even if it meant putting his own at risk, and it breaks my heart because now he’s gone. But I know that he thought what he did was right,” she concluded.

Mayor Elizabeth Kautz expressed her condolences and stated, “These officers and paramedic were heroes who dedicated their lives to serving and protecting our community. They will be remembered for their bravery and dedication.”
Officer Elmstrand had been with the Burnsville Police Department for 12 years and was known for his strong work ethic and commitment to community policing. He leaves behind a wife and three children.
Officer Ruge had recently joined the force, but had already made a positive impression with his colleagues and members of the community. He was known for his kindness and willingness to go above and beyond for others. He is survived by his parents and two siblings.
Paramedic Finseth had been working for the local fire department for five years and was highly respected by his peers. Known for his compassion and dedication to his patients, he is survived by his wife and two young children.
The Burnsville Police Department and local fire department are providing support to the families of the fallen officers and paramedic, as well as to their colleagues. The entire community is coming together to mourn the loss of these heroes and to show their support for their loved ones.
