20 Republicans Support Byron Donalds in Fourth House Speaker’s Vote
A fourth vote for House Speaker No one won enough votes Wednesday to be elected speaker. In the meantime, the House remains without a leader. 20 Republicans voted for Donalds, while Victoria Spartz from Indiana voted in favor of McCarthy. “present.” Despite negotiations Tuesday night intended to secure McCarthy’s victory, this was not the case.
After three contentious votes on Tuesday on the House Floor, the GOP nomination was approved. Kevin McCarthy, Jim JordanByron Donalds and Andy Biggs. The Democrats only had one candidate Hakeem Jeffries Brooklyn, NY. She continues to receive all 212 Democrat vote.
McCarthy was thought to have sought an adjournment of Congress until Thursday. This is likely because he didn’t have the votes.
To win the speakership, 218 votes were required. Dissension within the GOP led to fighting on the House Floor, which displayed a rebellious and raucous form of democracy that was not seen in over 100 years.
Chip Roy, a Texas Rep., made this observation while nominating Byron Donalds. Roy said that the House Speaker’s style of debate was superior to that seen on the floor.
“This country needs a change,” Roy stated. “This country needs leadership that does not reflect this city, this town that is badly broken. The House of Representatives is the people’s house. It represents the entirety of our country. And we each represent some 750,000 people. And we come here and it. Here we sit in a room filled with those representatives.”
Roy pointed out that although the House chamber was full of House Speakers, it is rare to be as full. “We should be in here having this kind of a conversation with this many people in the room about Ukraine,” Roy stated.
“And we should debate the merits and we should debate the ups and downs of being involved. We should debate the $45 billion. We should debate whether it should be more or less we should debate whether it should be paid for we should debate what the result we should demand. The only way you’re gonna get that is if you change the roles and have the leadership to advance the roles to make sure that we can do that,” He said.
Roy was one hold-outs Demanding a change of leadership from McCarthy and the GOP establishment. Donald Trump supported McCarthy.
