GOP Senator Thune backs Trump
The Second-Ranking Senate Republican Endorses Donald Trump for 2020 Rematch Against President Joe Biden
The second-ranking Senate Republican has officially endorsed former President Donald Trump, setting the stage for a potential 2020 rematch against President Joe Biden. Senator John Thune, the minority whip, shared his decision with Fox News after Trump’s victory in the GOP primary in Nikki Haley’s home state of South Carolina. Thune stated, “The primary results in South Carolina make clear that Donald Trump will be the Republican nominee for president in this year’s pivotal presidential election.”
Trump Gains Momentum as Haley Refuses to Bow Out
Despite her defeat in South Carolina, Nikki Haley has refused to bow out of the race, vowing to continue her campaign. However, with Trump securing endorsements from more than half of the Republicans in the Senate, as well as numerous House Republicans and governors, his delegate lead over Haley continues to grow.
Thune Joins Other Prominent Republicans in Backing Trump
Senator Thune’s endorsement of Trump follows Senator John Barrasso, the No. 3 GOP lawmaker in the Senate, in backing the former president. The only member of the Senate’s top three Republican leaders who has not endorsed Trump is Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. Thune expressed his support for Trump’s campaign and his commitment to working with a Republican majority in the Senate to restore American strength.

“Together we must put an end to the disastrous Biden-Schumer agenda,” Thune added, referring to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. “Our country cannot endure another four years of Bidenomics, continued lawlessness at our southern border, and American weakness on the global stage.”
Why did Senator John Cornyn endorse Donald Trump for a potential 2020 rematch against President Joe Biden?
Senate Republican, Senator John Cornyn of Texas, has officially endorsed former President Donald Trump for a potential 2020 rematch against President Joe Biden. This endorsement comes as a surprise to some, considering the tumultuous relationship between the two in the past. However, Cornyn believes that Trump’s conservative policies and strong Republican base make him the best candidate to take on President Biden in the upcoming elections.
Senator Cornyn announced his endorsement during a recent interview with Fox News, where he praised Trump’s ability to fight for conservative principles during his tenure as President. Cornyn highlighted Trump’s efforts to implement tax reform, secure the US-Mexico border, and appoint conservative judges as key achievements. He believes that these accomplishments have greatly benefited the American people and are worthy of continued support.
The endorsement of a high-ranking Senate Republican like Cornyn is significant as it reflects a growing trend within the GOP of rallying behind Trump. Since leaving office, Trump has maintained a strong influence over the Republican Party, and many senators see him as their best chance of regaining control of the White House.
While Cornyn acknowledged that Trump’s style and rhetoric may not resonate with everyone, he emphasized that policy outcomes matter more than personal disagreements. He stated, “I like to see a president, if I think he’s wrong – I’m not afraid to say that. But I also want to give credit where credit is due, and I think his policies worked.”
Cornyn’s endorsement also highlights the challenges faced by establishment Republicans in reconciling with Trump’s unorthodox approach to politics. Over the years, Trump has often clashed with GOP leaders, creating divisions within the party. However, his ability to connect with a certain segment of the population cannot be underestimated.
Given the strong support Trump enjoys among his base, it is not surprising that many Senate Republicans are aligning themselves with him. They view him as a powerful voice who can mobilize voters and deliver victories for the party. Therefore, it is essential for Republican senators to maintain a good relationship with Trump and his supporters to maximize their chances of success in future elections.
However, not all Republicans share Cornyn’s views. Some argue that Trump’s leadership style and divisive rhetoric have alienated key voting demographics, making it difficult for the party to broaden its appeal. They argue that the party needs new leadership and a fresh approach to attract a wider range of voters.
The endorsement by Senator Cornyn is likely to generate mixed reactions within the Republican Party. While Trump loyalists will view it as a much-needed show of unity, others may perceive it as a step backward for the GOP. Nonetheless, it is clear that Trump still holds significant sway over the party, as evidenced by the growing number of endorsements he has received from prominent Republicans.
As the 2022 mid-term elections approach, it will be interesting to see how Trump’s influence plays out within the Republican Party. Will more senators follow Cornyn’s lead and endorse him for a 2020 rematch against President Biden? Or will the party choose to chart a different course? Only time will tell, but one thing remains certain - Donald Trump’s presence in American politics is far from over.
