Authorities Searching for Suspects After Deadly Shooting at Philadelphia Basketball Court
Authorities in Pennsylvania are on the hunt for five suspects following a tragic shooting at a basketball court in North Philadelphia. The incident, which occurred over the weekend, left three people dead and one critically injured.
The shooting took place around 6 p.m. on August 11th when a group of five males opened fire on a gathering of people outside the 8th and Diamond Playground. According to police, nearby homes were also hit by the gunfire, but fortunately, no children were playing on the court at the time.
“The kids were on the other side of the fence playing in the street,” said Philadelphia Police Deputy Commissioner James Kelly. “But some of those rounds hit houses across the street. So it’s a tragic situation, but no young children got hit.”
The victims who lost their lives in the shooting have been identified as Nyreese Moore, 22, and Naasir Folk, 24. Both men suffered fatal gunshot wounds to the head. Isiah Williams, a 21-year-old man from Lawncrest, was also shot multiple times and tragically passed away from his injuries the following day.
The fourth victim, a male in his early 20s, was shot twice in the abdomen and is currently in critical condition at the hospital.
Authorities recovered over 50 spent shell casings from three different-caliber firearms at the scene, leading investigators to believe that the attack was targeted.
Mayor Kenney Condemns Violence and Offers Reward
Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney expressed his horror at the quadruple shooting in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. He offered his prayers for the victims and their families and announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for shootings near schools, recreation centers, or libraries.
Mayor Kenney also highlighted the installation of over 100 new security cameras around city recreation centers to deter crime and violence. He urged anyone with information to call 215-686-8477 to share an anonymous tip.
In a statement to WPVI-TV, the mayor emphasized the city’s commitment to working with the police department and parks and recreation to enhance security and prevent crime in and around recreation centers.
As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of three lives and hopes for the recovery of the critically injured victim.
