Tragic Collision in Palm Springs Claims Three Lives
ESCONDIDO, Calif.—Authorities have identified three Escondido residents who were tragically killed in a devastating three-vehicle collision this weekend. The incident, which occurred in Palm Springs, may have been caused by dusty conditions and poor visibility.
The victims have been identified as 32-year-old Yovani Aguilera Tapia, and 29-year-olds David Losacco and Millicent Lewis, according to the Riverside County coroner’s office.
“As we prioritize the well-being of those injured and extend our support to the affected families during this challenging time, we remind all drivers to exercise caution and adhere to safe driving practices, especially when faced with adverse weather conditions,” the Palm Springs Police Department wrote in a statement on Monday.
According to the police, the collision took place on North Gene Autry Trail between Salvia Road and Via Escuela in the wash area. Officers responded to the scene at 2:48 p.m. on Sept. 3.
Reportedly, two vehicles traveling north on Gene Autry had to slow down due to the presence of “blowing sand.” However, a third vehicle failed to reduce its speed, resulting in a rear-end collision with one of the vehicles.
Tragically, the driver and two rear passengers in one of the vehicles sustained fatal injuries, as confirmed by the police. The other individuals involved in the accident suffered minor to moderate injuries and were transported to a hospital for treatment. Authorities have stated that drugs or alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash.
If you have any information about the incident, please contact the Palm Springs Police Department’s traffic division at 760-323-8125.
It is important to note that a windblown dust advisory was in effect until 8 a.m. on Sept. 6 in the Coachella Valley, as stated by the South Coast Air Quality Management District.
