5 Connecticut kids killed in car accident on NY trip
On the weekend of March 19, 2023, a horrific car accident took place in Westchester County, New York, that resulted in the loss of lives of five Connecticut children.
Investigators are assessing the incident, which happened near Scarsdale, when a Nissan Rogue, in which the children were traveling, drove off the Hutchinson River Parkway, hit a tree, and caught fire. According to the Westchester County Police Department, among the casualties were four boys and one girl, ranging from 8 to 17 years old.
The only survivor of the collision was a 9-year-old boy who had been sitting in the car’s rear hatch. Police have not yet disclosed the child’s identity.
Reports indicate that the vehicle’s driver, 16-year-old Malik Smith II, might have fallen asleep, lost control, or became distracted before the accident.
The father of the driver, Malik Smith, confirmed that his son had driven before, even though he had not obtained a driver’s license or permit, and that the driver and the passengers were all relatives.
“That’s his thing. He goes to the mall. He goes to get his ice cream with his cousin. They go to the movies. They walk around the mall. They do what teenagers and kids do, you know… So that’s it’s just, I didn’t know he was driving by himself,” said Smith.
The youngster was rushed for medical assistance and brought to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, where he remains in treatment for non-lethal injuries, according to authorities.
The tragic incident has devastated family members and outraged the community. Kara Rochelle, a Connecticut State Representative, expressed her condolences on Facebook.
