Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said the Senate will hold a timely and fair impeachment trial for President Trump. He issued that promise while speaking on the Senate floor.

On Monday evening, the House sent over a single impeachment article charging President Trump with incitement of insurrection.

Democrat and Republican leaders have agreed to delay the trial for two weeks, until February 8, to give the President’s defense team time to prepare.

Schumer said the process will continue despite some GOP lawmakers raising concerns about the constitutionality of the move.

“The theory that the Senate can’t try former officials would amount to a constitutional ‘get out of jail free card’ for any president who commits an impeachable offense,” he stated. “The trial is going to happen, it is certainly and clearly constitutional and if the former president is convicted, there will be a vote to disqualify him from future office.”

Meanwhile, Joe Biden said he does not believe there will be enough GOP support to vote to convict President Trump. Democrats would need 17 Republican senators in order to move forward.
