Republican presidential candidate in 1996, Bob Dole, has died. According to a statement released by his family on Sunday, the prominent former senator died peacefully in his sleep overnight.
A war hero, Dole was injured saving a fellow soldier while fighting Nazi forces in Germany towards the end of World War II, leaving him partially paralyzed.
Dole came from Kansas and was first elected to the U.S. House in 1960. He was known for supporting the civil rights and voting rights acts, which he described as the most important votes he ever made.
He moved onto the Senate in 1968, where he worked his way up to majority leader before retiring to run for president against Bill Clinton in 1996. Dole was 98-years-old and is survived by his wife, Elizabeth.
