Marjorie Taylor Greene says Jan. 6 defendants are being treated worse than ‘terrorists’
People arrested in the Jan. 6, 2021 demonstration at the U.S. Capitol are giving the Biden administration a chance to try its hand at political persecution, said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene at a Capitol press conference, going on to describe conditions for arrestees that would constitute a complete perversion of the U.S. justice system.
The defendants are being treated like terrorists while they await trial, said the representative from Georgia, and are being subjected to mental torture and attempted re-education. “They have been beaten by the guards. They are called white supremacist. They are denied religious services, haircuts, shaving, the ability to trim their fingernails,” she said, appearing along with Rep. Louis Gohmert of Texas, Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz and Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona.
Greene likened the Jan. 6th prisoners to terrorists being held in the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in an account published by the Daily Mail.
“They are told that they have to denounce President Trump. They are told that their views are the views of cult members Even though these are men that every single night at nine at night, they put their hand over their heart and sing the national anthem voluntarily,” she said.
Greene also said prisoners were being put through Critical Race Theory training, being called white supremacists by their own government-appointed lawyers, and being “mocked because of their political beliefs.” Prisoners with medical conditions are being denied special diets, she said, causing illness and fasting, and some of them have public defenders who “hate them” and who “tell them they have to denounce their political views, want them to watch videos and read books that basically is critical race theory training.”
“No one’s been charged with insurrection,” Goehmert said, of people accused of various offenses in connection to the riot.
“In fact if they were going to charge someone with insurrection, it’s beginning to sound more like those would be agents for the federal government that was there stirring things up, trying to get people to engage in violence,” he stated.
D.C. Judge Royce Lamberth freed one Jan. 6th defendant last month, calling conditions at the D.C. facility where they were being held “deplorable” and “beyond belief.”
