Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) has demanded the New York Times explain whether it covered up Xi Jinping’s role in the geocide of Uyghur Muslims.

In a letter to the New York Times on Thursday, Rubio said the newspaper has failed to publish 403-pages of leaked Chinese government documents which detail religious persecution of Uyghurs. The senator pointed out the documents include a 2014 speech by President Jinping in which he ordered mass detention of Uyghurs in labor camps.

Rubio stressed the outlet has either underreported or censored that information and he seeks to know if it was done on purpose. He added too many American companies have cozied up to China for financial gain, but it must stop.

“Our economy and many of our most important companies have become heavily dependent on China. This dependence leads to the fact that on a daily basis now, we have not just government leaders, but major and important American corporations and leaders of industry that are advocating for policies and taking actions that are bad for America and our good for China,” stated Rubio. “Because when forced to choose billions more dollars in profit from China or the well-being of the country they live in and supposedly call home, they choose the profits.”

Rubio also said it looks like U.S. political leaders have known about the Uyghur genocide for awhile and have made a conscious arrangement not to talk about it.
