‘Who The Hell Is Going To Pay For CNN+?’: Howard Stern Mocks Chris Wallace’s Career Change

Radio shock jock Howard Stern mocked former “Fox News Sunday” anchor Chris Wallace after learning Sunday that Wallace was leaving the show after nearly two decades — and he planned to go to CNN’s new streaming platform, CNN+.

According to a report from Mediaite, Stern said on his Monday episode of “The Howard Stern Show” that he had always liked Wallace, but that he wasn’t sure the move would be good for his career.

“I always thought he was a level-headed guy. The guy actually pulled it off. I used to watch him on Fox News and go, ‘How does he put up with this sh*t?’” Stern said, adding, “I gotta tell ya: people don’t watch CNN, who the hell is going to pay for CNN+? Are they out of their mind? CNN+, I mean what is that? Regular CNN isn’t enough?”

“Good luck being seen on that thing,” Stern continued, arguing that he didn’t expect many people to shell out monthly for the opportunity to watch an extension of CNN’s network, Wallace or no Wallace. “I mean I like Chris Wallace, but I’m not paying a monthly service fee.”

Stern then posited that Wallace might have chosen CNN because they made him a better offer.

“He was on Fox News for 18 years, I’m sure they’re pissed because they were pretty loyal to him. They probably weren’t coming up with the dough re mi. I mean they probably offered him some good money,” Stern said before going down a bit of a rabbit hole and suggesting that he was looking for a more relaxed work environment.

“Maybe he said to himself, ‘They just had Jeffrey Toobin jerking off on a zoom meeting, and they didn’t really fire him, so that’s probably a good place to work. You can jerk off on your zoom and not get fired.’ I think he saw an opportunity,” Stern said.

Wallace announced at the end of “Fox News Sunday” that it was to be his final appearance on the show. Later in the day he revealed his plan to move to CNN+, a new streaming service that is set to launch in early 2022.

Colleagues flooded Twitter with their well-wishes after the news broke.

“Sad to see Chris go- he’s had an amazing run at @FoxNewsSunday,” Fox News anchor Bret Baier tweeted. “Chris -I wish you well with your next adventure. It was an honor to work alongside you all these years.”

“Chris Wallace and I have been friends since we covered the House of Representatives together in the late 70’s,” Fox News senior political analyst Brit Hume added, sharing a photo of himself with Wallace. “I was delighted we ended up together at Fox News, and am sad to see him go. I wish him all the best in his next adventures.”

Fox News media released a statement on Wallace’s departure, saying, “We are extremely proud of our journalism and the stellar team that Chris Wallace was a part of for 18 years. The legacy of ‘Fox News Sunday’ will continued with our star journalists, many of whom will rotate in the position until a permanent host is named.”
