‘Progressive’ PAC Urges Lib Donors to Sign Thank-You Card for Scandal-Plagued Lincoln Project
A progressive PAC dedicated to increasing Democratic turnout and “passing Democratic laws” is collecting signatures for a thank-you card to honor the Lincoln Project’s support of that mission.
Stop Republicans, an affiliate of the Progressive Turnout Project, founded by longtime Democratic operative Harry Pascal, sent an email to supporters this week urging them to sign the Lincoln Project’s card to thank the controversial group for its efforts to defeat Republicans in 2020 and beyond.
“The Lincoln Project is a group of Republican campaigners that renounced Trump, renounced the RNC, and then spent MILLIONS to help Joe Biden win the 2020 Election,” the email reads, citing as evidence the fact that the Lincoln Project’s “Trump-bashing TV Ads went VIRAL on the Internet!!”
In reality, the Lincoln Project’s efforts to unseat Republican politicians didn’t amount to much in the form of “help.” For example, the group targeted seven incumbent GOP senators in 2020, including Sens. Susan Collins (R., Maine), Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.), and Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.). Yet despite spending almost $12 million on those key races, all seven Republicans were reelected—by double-digit margins in most cases.
In any event, Stop Republicans is hopeful the Lincoln Project’s recently announced campaign to oust Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Texas) will be more successful in 2024, assuming the Lincoln Project can survive that long.
The controversial Super PAC is currently in disarray after one of its founding members, John Weaver, was credibly accused of having inappropriate sexual interactions with dozens of young men. The Lincoln Project waited weeks to comment on the allegations until the New York Times published a story about them on Sunday.
The Lincoln Project, which shares office space and personnel with a number of Democratic-aligned organizations, is viewed with skepticism by critics on both the right and the left. So it’s somewhat bizarre that a liberal PAC would publicly applaud the group’s efforts.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) suggested the group was in “scam territory” after failing to deliver better results for Democrats at the congressional level in 2020. The massive amounts of money the Lincoln Project raised, according to AOC, would be put to better use by people “who deserve it.”
The Progressive Turnout Project raised more than $80 million during the 2020 election cycle, or slightly less than the Lincoln Project, which raised more than $87 million.
