Senate passes budget resolution in 51-50 vote

The Senate passed a budget resolution, in turn, paving the way for a Democrat-driven coronavirus relief package. In a vote early Friday morning, Kamala Harris as President of the Senate broke the 50-50 tie to send Senate Concurrent Resolution Five to the House.

Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and sponsor of the budget bill Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.) said the bill was a chance to show Americans its lawmakers were listening.

However, that opportunity was not extended across the aisle as the resolutions’ passage now sets the stage for House Democrats to use reconciliation to push through their own package.

With this in mind, Sanders included detailed reconciliation instructions within his resolution, which allows congressional committees the chance to move forward without Republican input.
