Jim Jordan Rejects January 6 Committee’s ‘Unprecedented And Inappropriate’ Request For Interview
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) turned down a request Sunday to appear before the House select committee investigating the January 6 riot.
Jordan sent a letter to committee chairman Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) calling the request that Jordan sit for an interview with the committee “unprecedented and inappropriate.”
“The American people are tired of Democrats’ nonstop investigations and partisan witch hunts. Your letter of December 22, 2021, unfortunately continues this Democrat obsession. It amounts to an unprecedented and inappropriate demand to examine the basis for a colleague’s decision on a particular matter pending before the House of Representatives,” Jordan wrote. “This request is far outside the bounds of any legitimate inquiry, violates core Constitutional principles, and would serve to further erode legislative norms.”
“As you well know, I have no relevant information that would assist the Select Committee in advancing any legitimate legislative purpose. I cannot speak to Speaker Pelosi’s failure to ensure the appropriate security posture at the Capitol complex in advance of well-publicized protests on January 6, 2021. I cannot elaborate on former U.S. Capitol Police Chief Steven Sun’s statement that a concern about ‘optics’ – following widespread calls from Democrats in 2020 to defund the police – contributed to the limited security response,” he continued.
“I have nothing to add to the bipartisan, comprehensive findings of the Senate investigative committees or to those issued by federal inspectors general. I cannot testify about the Justice Department’s ongoing law enforcement efforts, although I am aware of reports that the FBI has determined the violence was not coordinated or part of any ‘organized plot to overturn the presidential election result,’” Jordan said.
Last year, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) rejected Jordan’s nomination to the committee by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). In response, McCarthy pulled his nominees and said Republicans would not be a part of the committee. Two Republicans did end up on the committee, Reps. Liz Cheney (R-WY) and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), who sought out positions on the committee individually.
At the time, Pelosi said she rejected Jordan and another Republican nominee, Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN), citing concerns for the “integrity of the investigation.”
“With respect for the integrity of the investigation, with an insistence on the truth and with concern about statements made and actions taken by these Members, I must reject the recommendations of Representatives Banks and Jordan to the Select Committee,” the House speaker said in a statement.
McCarthy hammered Pelosi in his response:
Speaker Nancy Pelosi has taken the unprecedented step of denying the minority party’s picks for the Select Committee on January 6. This represents an egregious abuse of power and will irreparably damage this institution. Denying the voices of members who have served in the military and law enforcement, as well as leaders of standing committees, has made it undeniable that this panel has lost all legitimacy and credibility and shows the Speaker is more interested in playing politics than seeking the truth.
Unless Speaker Pelosi reverses course and seats all five Republican nominees, Republicans will not be party to their sham process and will instead pursue our own investigation of the facts.
