‘I Stand Corrected’: Whoopi Goldberg Apologizes Hours After Claiming Holocaust Was ‘Not About Race’

“The View” host Whoopi Goldberg apologized Monday after being hit by a tidal wave of backlash over her claims that the Holocaust was “not about race.”

“On today’s show, I said the Holocaust ‘is not about race, but about man’s inhumanity to man.’ I should have said it is about both,” Goldberg wrote in a statement she shared on Twitter. “As Jonathan Greenblatt from the Anti-Defamation League shared, ‘The Holocaust was about the Nazi’s [sic] systematic annihilation of the Jewish people — who they deemed to be an inferior race.’ I stand corrected. The Jewish people around the world have always had my support and that will never waiver [sic]. I’m sorry for the hurt I have caused. Written with my sincerest apologies, Whoopi Goldberg.”

Goldberg provoked an immediate response from her cohosts on the ABC daytime talk show when, during a conversation about a school that banned the Holocaust-themed graphic novel “Maus,” Goldberg argued that the Holocaust had not been “about race.”

Sparks fly as The View panel confronts Whoopi after she says “the Holocaust isn’t about race. No. It’s not about race.”
“Well, the considered Jews a different race,” Joy Behar says.

“But it’s about white supremacy. It’s about going after Jews and Gypsies,” Ana Navarro adds. pic.twitter.com/GZwZSi2qXi

Goldberg repeated the claim several times over the objections of her cohosts. Joy Behar pointed out the fact that the Nazi regime had considered the Jewish people to be a different race — and had also targeted black people — and Ana Navarro noted that the Nazis had been white supremacists and had also rounded up and killed gypsies.

As The Daily Wire reported:

“It’s not about race. It’s not about race,” Goldberg insisted.

“What is it about?” Behar asked.

“It’s about man’s inhumanity to man. That’s what it’s about,” Goldberg replied.

“But it’s about white supremacy,” Navarro objected. “It’s about going after Jews and gypsies —”

“But it’s not about —” Goldberg interrupted. “These are two white groups of people. How do we —”

“They came after black people too,” Behar pointed out, noting that the Nazis had not considered Jews to be “white” either.

“But you’re missing the point. You’re missing the point. The minute you turn it into race, it goes down this alley,” Goldberg was insistent. “Let’s talk about it for what it is. It’s how people treat each other. It’s a problem. It doesn’t matter if you are black or white because black, white, Jews, Italians, everybody eats each other.

Daily Wire editor emeritus Ben Shapiro called Goldberg out, saying that her comments were “insidious.”

Whoopi Goldberg explaining that the Holocaust wasn’t about race because these were “two groups of white people” isn’t just insipid, it’s insidious. It’s downplaying the minority status of Jews in order to uphold bullshit intersectional arguments that justify anti-Semitism today.

The intersectional argument is that Jews are white people, and that Jews are disproportionately successful thanks to “white supremacy.” Because racism is “animus plus power,” and Jews are powerful because they are white, anti-Semitism from non-white supremacists isn’t bigotry.

The attempt to abstract the causes of the Holocaust from Jew-hatred to “man’s inhumanity to man” is actually a way of obscuring and covering for anti-Semitism.
