Supreme Court Denies Trump Bid to Stop Records Release to Jan. 6 Panel
The Supreme Court on Tuesday ended former President Donald Trump‘s pursuit to block the release of White House records sought by the Jan. 6 committee investigating the riot at the Capitol last year.
The high court’s decision on Tuesday follows its rejection of the former president’s claims last month when Trump was prevented from using executive privilege to block the Democratic-led investigation from accessing a trove of records from the previous administration.
Trump’s legal team has sought to thwart the House select committee’s access to presidential records pertaining to its inquiry into the riot. On Dec. 9, the former president was issued a major setback when a federal appeals court ruled Trump had no basis to challenge President Joe Biden’s decision to allow the records to be handed over to the committee, prompting his appeal to the highest court.
SUPREME COURT REFUSES TRUMP PLEA TO BLOCK NATIONAL ARCHIVES FROM GIVING RECORDS TO JAN. 6 PANEL
The former president argued he had the authority to invoke executive privilege over records related to some internal White House communications. However, lower courts argued Biden’s authority outweighed Trump’s ability to shield such documents.
The committee investigating the riot has said the records are necessary to understanding the role Trump may have played in the chaotic and violent riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, when the building was breached amid the former president’s calls for Congress to reexamine the 2020 election before certifying Biden as the victor.

Presidential records recently retrieved from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort by the National Archives were found to contain classified national security information, according to a letter sent by archivist David Ferriero on Friday.
Investigators on the committee have most recently sought the National Archives to produce visitor logs, phone records, and written communications between the former president’s advisers.
