As Ukrainians Fear For Their Lives, Joy Behar’s ‘Scared’ Because Her Italian Vacation Might Be Ruined
It has been said that “without sorrow, there can be no joy,” and that was ever the case on Thursday for Joy Behar as she expressed her sorrow over Russia’s war in Ukraine on ABC’s “The View” because the timing of the military invasion has interfered with her vacation to Italy — which she has been trying to go on for four years now.
Behar made the comment immediately after her co-host discussed that it has been estimated that thousands of individuals will be killed in Ukraine because of Russia’s attacks and that a humanitarian crisis may form, impacting millions in Europe. The juxtaposition of the two women’s comments drew ire on the internet, with many pointing out how out of touch and callous Behar sounded.
While discussing the impact of Russia’s invasion, Hostin said, “I think what I also thought about was the fact that estimates are 50,000 Ukrainians will be dead or wounded, and that this is going to start a humanitarian crisis, a refugee crisis in Europe; we’re talking about 5 million people that are going to be displaced.”
“I mean, it’s heartbreaking to hear what is going to happen,” Hostin said with sadness.
Then, Behar jumped in to explain how the war will impact Western Europe outside of Ukraine — and how it will directly impact her life.
“I’m scared of what’s going to happen in Western Europe, too,” she said.
“You know, you just, you plan a trip. You want to go there, want to go to Italy for four years. I haven’t been able to make it because of the pandemic, and now this. You know, it’s like, what’s gonna happen there?” Behar lamented, referencing the disruption in global travel due to COVID-19, a virus which has killed millions around the globe.
The clip sparked some strong responses online. “I literally can’t believe Joy Behar said this,” conservative commentator Liz Wheeler remarked.

The New York Post’s Karol Markowicz cheekily replied, “Did Putin even stop to think how his invasion would affect Joy Behar’s trip to Italy?”

Even Barstool Sports’ Kevin Clancy piled on Behar, saying, “The true horror of the worldwide pandemic and Russia invading Ukraine? Joy Behar hasn’t been able to take her trip to Italy. Thoughts and Prayers for Joy. We hope she makes it through this tragedy.”

While Behar was making her comments, Russians were reportedly bombing Ukrainian hospitals. As The Daily Wire reported, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba tweeted , “Consider this: Putin has launched a massive war of aggression in Europe during a still raging pandemic. On top of that, Russians bomb Ukrainian hospitals now. This is beyond evil. The only moral choice any government can make now is to support Ukraine by all means.”
Thursday afternoon, Ukraine’s Minister of Health Viktor Lyashko said that at least 57 Ukrainians had died and 169 others had been injured since the attacks began earlier that day. Those numbers surely have risen since then.
