Zelensky Doesn’t Know if Ukraine Can Hold Off Russian Forces

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the comedian-turned-president whose leadership in the face of a Russian invasion has drawn comparisons to Winston Churchill, admitted Thursday he doesn’t know how much longer his embattled nation can hold on.

When asked if Ukraine could hold off Russian forces advancing into the country during a press conference Thursday, Zelensky answered frankly, “I don’t know,” as reported by ABC News.

Despite not knowing the future of his country, the Ukrainian president said he has no intentions of leaving Kyiv.

Zelensky also addressed support from the United States, commenting it was a “pity” it came after the war had already begun.

“It’s a pity it began after the beginning of this war, but we have it. My appreciation to [President Biden] and his team. We can speak now often,” Zelensky told Fox News’s Trey Yingst.

The Biden administration has maintained it would not deploy troops to fight in Ukraine, instead supplying the county with several aid packages and weapon shipments in months leading up to Russia’s invasion last Thursday.

Zelensky’s comment, who has avoided directly answering questions about the state of Russia’s advancement into Ukraine, comes a day after Russia claimed they had taken control of Kherson.

Kherson, located near the Black Sea, is reportedly the first major Ukrainian city to fall.
