No Anonymous Sources: Luke Rosiak’s New Book Delivers Extensive Take-Down Of Public Schools
A new book on K-12 schools by Daily Wire investigative reporter Luke Rosiak has 826 footnotes and no anonymous sources, making for a detailed work of objective investigative journalism that, over the course of 18 chapters, threatens to do for numerous areas of the country what his Daily Wire reporting on a rape in Loudoun County, Virginia, did there.
The project was kept under tight wraps for two years, but the resulting 318-page book — Race to the Bottom: Uncovering the Secret Forces Destroying American Public Education — hits shelves on March 8. The research for the book included submitting more than 100 Freedom of Information Act requests.
The footnotes directing the reader to primary evidence could form a roadmap for law enforcement, politicians, and parent sleuths, creating the sort of impact nationwide that Rosiak’s Daily Wire reporting had in Virginia.
In one of Rosiak’s first Daily Wire stories in March 2020, he catapulted Loudoun County, Virginia to the national stage with his story revealing how school board members, the county prosecutor, and far-Left activists came together in a secret Facebook group called “Anti-Racist Parents of Loudoun County.” In the Facebook group, members plotted to hack and doxx parents who questioned school policies, and some were put on their enemies list simply for remaining neutral or for asking someone to explain why Dr. Suess books were racist.
The group was later christened “Chardonnay Antifa” on Tucker Carlson’s show, while others called them the “Anti-Parent Racists.” The expose triggered a criminal investigation by the Loudoun County sheriff, who subpoenaed Facebook and determined that despite group members hiding their venom under the guise of rooting out racism, most parents targeted merely wanted their children to attend school, and were questioning why the board was keeping schools closed (a position advocated for by the teachers union).
Rosiak was also the first journalist to bring the books “Gender Queer” and “Lawn Boy” to light. The books are so profane that the Fairfax County School Board did not allow a mother to read from them at their meeting, citing the fact that children might be present. That led to Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe being questioned on the role parents should play in schools, leading to his admission that “I don’t believe parents should be telling schools what they should teach.”
In October, Rosiak revealed, in a Daily Wire investigation the length of a book chapter, that Loudoun County Public Schools’ superintendent lied about the rape of a ninth-grade girl at the hands of a skirt-wearing boy; that the prosecutor tried to put the victim’s father in jail while releasing the suspect, resulting in the suspect assaulting a second girl in school; and that the school board passed a transgender policy shortly after that may not have passed if the incident had not been concealed.
Change resulted from this exposure of facts. The school board admitted to falsely telling the state there had been no sexual assaults in the school, and said it would reform its policies. The board member at the center of Chardonnay Antifa resigned.
Polling in the governor’s race immediately began to change, putting Republican candidate Glenn Youngkin — who made the rape and all that it represents a centerpiece of his campaign — over the top in the election the next month. New Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares has begun an investigation into the Loudoun County schools. A court ordered that Loudoun stop requiring students to wear masks, ruling on a lawsuit that cited Rosiak’s reporting six times.
But Rosiak says he examined Loudoun’s schools simply because he lives in the area, and that it was intended to serve as merely a case study. He says similar dynamics are present in many of the 13,000 school districts across the country.
Now the only question is whether Race to the Bottom will trigger the same kind of reckoning elsewhere.
