Second Arrest Made In Sacramento Mass Shooting That Killed Six People; More Arrests Expected
A second suspect was arrested on Tuesday related to a Sacramento shooting spree that killed six people and wounded 12 others, according to local police.
The second suspect, who is not being named per Daily Wire policy against naming mass shooters, is the brother of the first suspect arrested, and was apprehended at a local hospital after being treated for injuries sustained by gunfire in the shooting. Once released from treatment, he is scheduled to be booked for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and possession of a machine gun.
On Monday, Sacramento District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert issued a statement concerning the arrest of the first suspect.
“Yesterday, Sacramento Police Chief Lester advised the public that there were multiple shooters involved in this incident. The Sacramento Police Department made an arrest of an individual for assault with a firearm and a gun-related charge. This individual has not been arrested for any homicide related to this incident,” the statement read.
“The investigation is highly complex involving many witnesses, videos of numerous types and significant physical evidence. This is an ongoing investigation and we anticipate more arrests in this case. Our ethical obligations as prosecutors prevents us from commenting about the specifics of the case. We will be reviewing the evidence provided to our office and making a determination of what, if any, charges are appropriate. If charges are filed, the complaint will be released to the public,” it added.
More than 100 shell casings were reportedly found at the scene of the crime and involved multiple shooters.
The Associated Press identified the six people who died as including “a father of four, a young woman who wanted to be a social worker, a man described as the life of the party, and a woman who lived on the streets nearby and was looking for housing.”
The report also noted that, “The Sacramento County coroner identified the women killed as Johntaya Alexander, 21; Melinda Davis, 57; and Yamile Martinez-Andrade, 21. The three men were Sergio Harris, 38; Joshua Hoye-Lucchesi, 32; and De’vazia Turner, 29.”
A portion of the shooting was captured on video. State leaders issued statements about the incident, expressing their remorse and blasting the shooting as evidence of rising gun crime in the city, state, and nation. The Daily Wire reported:
The Sacramento Bee reported Sunday morning that Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester said there were “no suspects in custody” and adding that “it wasn’t immediately clear if the victims were deliberately targeted, or how many shooters were involved.
“Right now our investigators are arriving at the scene,” Lester said. “This is very preliminary.”
The Bee had a few details as to when the shooting occurred, but it remained unclear where the event unfolded:
The shooting happened just after 2 a.m. near the 1000 block of K Street, but details about where the incident occurred have not been confirmed. The shooting scene was strewn across at least two blocks, with broken glass and police markers on 10th Street from K to L, as officers work the scene; police were also investigating at 12th and K streets.
