‘Any Tweet That Was Not ‘I love Hillary Clinton,’ I Got A Call For’: Roseanne Barr Documentary Explores How She Was Canceled
Roseanne Barr is back, and she has some strong feelings about getting canceled from Hollywood.
The 69-year-old comedian is promoting a new documentary explaining her fall from public favor called “Roseanne: Kicked Out of Hollywood.” It debuts on Reelz on April 24.
“Any tweet that was not ‘I love Hillary Clinton,’ I got a call for,” Barr claimed in the expose, according to Fox News.
The “Roseanne” alum also discussed how her family begged her to stop tweeting, but she refused because she loved it too much.
“Everyone was begging me to give up my Twitter. Everyone,” the comedian said. “My kids were trying to lock me out, but I wouldn’t because it’s like I just couldn’t.”
“I’m a g**damn American and I’m not going to do it,” she continued. “I’m a comic. I’m a bad girl. I’m too rock and roll. I’m going to say f*** it and f*** you until I take my last breath.”
Barr also addressed the tweet that led to her getting fired. The tweet read, “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby” and was aimed at former White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett.
“I shoulda not did it, but by God, I was really pissed that day,” Barr said of the incident. “I did something I wouldn’t do if I hadn’t been on that Ambien. It makes you do a lot of crazy sh**.”
Barr released an apology on Twitter at the time. “I apologize to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans,” the actress wrote. “I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her politics and her looks. I should have known better. Forgive me-my joke was in bad taste.”
However, her words weren’t enough to keep ABC from canceling “Roseanne” in response to the original comment, according to CNBC. They called Barr’s “abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values.”
In the new documentary, Barr says she wasn’t given a chance to properly apologize and try to redeem herself.
“When they called me up they were like, ‘What possible excuse have you got for why you did this? Why you did such an egregious, unforgivable thing?’ And I said, ‘I have no excuse. The only thing is, I thought she was white. And they said nothing back,” she said.
“And then I said, ‘Let me go on ‘The View’ tomorrow and explain it and apologize. I made a mistake.’”
Ultimately, Barr sees herself being unfairly targeted for making a mistake.
“Witch-burning is what it is,” Barr said of getting fired and canceled. “Intellectual witch-burning. And arrogance and ignorance. All of the press of the United States, and the world and how they interpreted my tweet without any knowledge of the fact that I was sending it to a journalist in Iran about what was happening to the people in Iran. We were under such terrible censorship and it’s just terrible and frightening.”
The documentary includes statements from Mo’Nique, Howie Mandel, and “Roseanne” executive producer Allan Stephan, who all insist Barr is not actually racist.
