Trailed By Heavy Criticism From Trump, Liz Cheney Announces She Is Running For Re-Election

On Thursday, Republican Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney officially filed to again run for her seat in the United States House of Representatives.

Her announcement, made in a Thursday video, allays questions about whether the hotly discussed Wyoming Republican would concede to criticism, notably from former President Donald Trump, and bow out of the race.

“If we set aside our founding principles for the politics of the moment, the miracle of our constitutional republic will slip away,” Cheney says in the video. “We must not let that happen.”

Cheney gained quite a few enemies in the GOP through her repeated criticism of Trump and when she voted to impeach the former president following the January 6 Capitol Riot.

“He crossed lines no American president has ever crossed before,” Cheney told host George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “This Week” following the Capitol Riot.

“You know, we entrust the survival of our republic into the hands of the chief executive, and when a president refuses to tell the mob to stop, when he refuses to defend any of the coordinate branches of government, he cannot be trusted,” she added of Trump.

Her announcement comes only two days before Trump will rally in support of Cheney challenger Harriet Hageman, according to the Caster Star-Tribune.

“This Save America rally is a continuation of President Trump’s unprecedented effort to advance the MAGA agenda by energizing voters and highlighting America First candidates and cause,” a press release about the event says.

In addition to Hageman, Cheney also faces opponents Anthony Bouchard, a Republican state senator, and Denton Knapp, a retired army colonel.

“In Wyoming, we know what it means to ride for the brand. We live in the greatest nation God has ever created, and our brand is the U.S. Constitution,” she tweeted. “I’m running for re-election and asking for your vote because this is a fight we must win.”

Hageman officially filed for the congressional race on Thursday. In a previously released ad, Hageman strongly criticizes Cheney for her “relentless war” on Trump, drawing on the metaphor of riding for the brand, as do the cattlemen and cowboys in Wyoming loyal to their outfit and the person who hired them.

“Liz Cheney doesn’t know what riding for the brand means,” the narrator in the ad says. “We sent her to D.C. to be loyal to the outfit that hired her. Be loyal to Wyoming, and our values. Instead of fighting for us, she’s fighting against President Trump. She betrayed us, she betrayed our values, she betrayed the brand.”
