Internal Crisis Sparked at Washington Post Over Columnist Retweeting Joke
Get some popcorn for this show of internal blood sports activities in the workplace. This story hails from the walls of The Wa Post, where one retweet caused a staff meltdown that got very ugly on Twitter.
It wasn’t the particular worst joke. Long-time politics reporter for the publication, Sawzag Weigel, retweeted a joke that some over presently there found deplorable. YouTube sponsor Cam Harless tweeted, “Every girl is bi. You simply have to figure out if it’s polar or sexual. ” Yes, not the worst issue to say or tweet, however it caused so much of an issue it led to Weigel apologizing (via Fox News ):
Wa Post’s Chief Communications Official Kris Coratti told Sibel News, “Editors have made crystal clear to the staff that the twitter update was reprehensible and challenging language or actions like this will not be tolerated. ”
Weigel also taken out the retweet from their Twitter page and released an apology.
“I just removed the retweet of an offensive laugh. I apologize and did not suggest to cause any damage, ” Weigel wrote.
Harless, the original writer of the tweet, reacted in order to Weigel’s apology, writing, “it’s weird to see someone else apologize for something you messaged, ” also calling this “grim af. ”

Weigel’s friend Felicia Sonmez took the screenshot of Weigel’s retweet and posted it upon Friday with the comment, “Fantastic to work at a news store where retweets like this are usually allowed! ”

CNN’s Oliver Darcy reported Kelly’s statement Fri and added that there have been an internal conversation about Weigel’s retweet on the Post’s inner Slack channel, with nationwide editor Matea Gold considering in.

Another Post reporter, Jose Del Real, replied in order to Sonmez’s tweet with 2 tweets of his own, recognizing that Weigel’s retweet has been “terrible and unacceptable, ” but urging her to simply accept his apology instead of “rallying the internet to attack your pet for a mistake he produced, ” which “doesn’t really solve anything. ”
“Felicia, we all screw up from time to time, ” Del Genuine wrote. “Engaging in recurring and targeted public nuisance of a colleague is none a good look nor could it be particularly effective. It transforms the language of inclusivity straight into clout chasing and lovato. I don’t think this is appropriate…There is such a thing as difficult with compassion. ”
