FACT CHECK: Did Jim Jordan Call Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ‘Dumb’ During A Recent Exchange?
A video shared on Facebook claims Republican Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan called Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez “dumb” during an exchange.
Verdict: False
A spokesman for Jordan refuted the claim. The video featured in the post does not show Jordan calling Ocasio-Cortez “dumb.”
Fact Check:
Ocasio-Cortez and 16 other members of Congress were arrested July 19 during a pro-abortion demonstration in front of the Supreme Court, according to CNN. A video shared on Facebook claims another member of Congress recently called her “dumb.”
The video, viewed over 15,000 times, features a headline that reads, “YOU’RE JUST DUMB!’ JIM JORDAN SILENCES AOC in Congress in Epic Exchange” and shows clips of Ocasio-Cortez, Jordan and other representatives.
The video’s headline is false. There is no evidence such an exchange between Jordan and Ocasio-Cortez occurred. Check Your Fact found no credible news reports suggesting an exchange of that nature took place. There are likewise no press releases or tweets from Jordan suggesting he called Ocasio-Cortez “dumb.”
“This exchange did not happen,” Russell Dye, a spokesman for Jordan, confirmed to Check Your Fact in an email. (RELATED: Did Jim Jordan Tell Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez To ‘Go Back To Bartending’?)
The video included in the post does not show the alleged exchange. Rather, it shows Ocasio-Cortez being interrupted by former Republican North Carolina Rep. Mark Meadows during a 2019 congressional hearing, according to C-SPAN. Another clip from the video shows Republican Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene criticizing Ocasio-Cortez and the Green New Deal.
The video also includes some clips of Jordan speaking about impeaching former President Donald Trump. Another clip features an exchange between the Ohio congressman and Democratic Georgia Rep. Lucy McBath during a 2020 hearing in which former Attorney General Bill Barr testified. Jordan does not call Ocasio-Cortez or McBath dumb in either clip.
This is not the first time false claims about Ocasio-Cortez have circulated on social media. Check Your Fact recently debunked a claim suggesting the congresswoman faked her recent arrest at the Supreme Court.
