As illegal migrants continue to cross into the United States, border states have been sending migrants to “sanctuary cities.” Missouri Senator Josh Hawley is hoping to make it easier for states to deport illegal immigrants. Hawley introduced the empowering states to deport illegal immigrants act today, allowing states and local law enforcement to enforce certain federal immigration laws. Under this law, the power to begin prosecutions for federal violation of immigration law would be provided to state prosecutors. This comes after Republicans criticize the Biden Administration for not doing enough to secure the border. Border officials say more than two million illegals have been apprehended at the border this fiscal year, a record high.
In NYC, several more buses are expected to arrive Tuesday. This influx of migrants has caused NYC to construct a “tent city,” which will be a large area with heated tents to hold illegal migrants while they wait for a screening process.
“We don’t want what is supposed to be temporary to become permanent. So we don’t want this temporary respite center to end up becoming a de facto shelter for folks where there is a thousand beds, right? Where people are going to be sleeping and literally just being there in Orchard Beach, which is incredibly far from true mass transit.” said Murad Awawdeh, the executive director of NY immigration coalition.
Meanwhile, NYC Mayor Eric Adams continues to criticize the release of migrants into the city, pointing at Republicans governors like Greg Abbott, Doug Ducey, and Ron DeSantis, although critics say his criticism should be directed towards the Biden Administration.
