Poll: Americans Favor GOP To Handle Economy and National Security

More Americans trust the Republican Party to handle the economy and national security as Americans’ approval of the Democratic Party continues to fall, according to a Gallup poll released Monday.

The poll, conducted in September, found that since last year the Republican Party’s favorability went up 4 points to 44 percent while the Democratic Party’s fell by the same amount to 39 percent. When asked which party would do a better job protecting the nation against international terrorism and military threats, 57 percent of participants favored the GOP, outpacing the Democratic Party by 20 points. Americans also trust the GOP to do a better job handling the economy by a 10-point margin.

With approval ratings for the Biden administration at record lows and inflation at the forefront of voters’ minds, the Democratic Party faces an uphill battle in the November midterm elections. Democrats’ rating of their own party dropped 10 points since Biden took office in January 2021. The GOP’s rating increased by the same amount among its own members.

Gallup reports that the Democratic Party’s approval ratings are 12 points below their 51 percent trend average, their worst rating since March 2015. The Republican Party’s ratings remain consistent with their trend average since 1992.
