Trump And Other Victims Of Twitter’s Anti-Free Speech Rampage Restored Under Musk
Mere weeks after acquiring Twitter, Elon Musk moved forward with restoring some of the platform’s wrongfully shunned and censored users, including former President Donald Trump.
Musk previously pledged to end the Big Tech company’s suppression of speech. Now, he is beginning to follow through on that promise by restoring users such as The Babylon Bee, which was locked out of its account for refusing to delete a tweet poking fun at the leftist media’s elevation of biological men as “women of the year,” Jordan Peterson, Project Veritas, Andrew Tate, Kanye West, James Lindsay, and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.
“I’m the only Member of Congress the unelected big tech oligarchs permanently banned. On January 2, 2022, they violated my freedom of speech and ability to campaign & fundraise crying ‘covid misinformation.’ My account is back,” Greene tweeted from her previously locked account on Monday.
Even leftist Kathy Griffin, who was suspended from Twitter for impersonating Musk, was given her account back.
It’s unclear what criteria Twitter is using to unlock or reinstate previously suspended accounts. Especially since Musk said Twitter’s new freedom of speech policy still ensures “Negative/hate tweets will be max deboosted & demonetized, so no ads or other revenue to Twitter,” and Musk has vowed to disallow users such as Alex Jones back on the platform.
What is clear is that Musk’s decision to reinstate Trump, specifically, was not his alone. Instead of relying on the input of a “content moderation council with widely diverse viewpoints” to determine “major content decisions or account reinstatements,” as he previously pledged to do, Musk put the fate of Trump’s Twitter in users’ hands via a digital poll.
Of the 15,085,458 users who voted in the poll over the weekend, 51.8 percent said Twitter should restore Trump’s account, while 48.2 percent voted against it.
“The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated,” Musk wrote on Saturday. “Vox Populi, Vox Dei.”
After months of censoring Trump’s tweets, including barring users from interacting with the president’s video calling for peace on January 6, Twitter permanently banned the president two days after the Capitol riot. The Big Tech company orchestrated the takedown under the guise that the president’s tweets could pose a “risk of further incitement of violence.”
Twitter’s treatment of Trump was not isolated. For years, the Big Tech company used its power to silence Democrats’ political enemies and suppress information contrary to the corrupt corporate media’s narrative.
Only time will tell, however, whether Musk will follow through on letting other users, such as my colleague John Daniel Davidson, shamed for the sin of stating the truth about the U.S. Assistant Secretary for Health Rachel Levine’s biology, back on Twitter.
