Body Cam Footage Of Paul Pelosi Attack Shown In Court
Prosecutors played body camera footage of the hammer attack on Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), in a San Francisco courtroom on Wednesday.
The proceedings were part of a preliminary hearing for alleged assailant David DePape, who has pleaded not guilty to federal and state charges, including attempted murder and attempted kidnapping, in connection to the October 28 break-in at the Pelosi residence in Pacific Heights.
Reporters up in the gallery of the state court were able to hear but not see the 15-second video clip of an officer’s body-worn camera because the TV monitor was facing the judge, according to KRON 4. News outlets reported what was said in audio, covering the moments when police officers arrived at the home and witnessed DePape and 82-year-old Paul Pelosi struggling over a hammer.
“Good morning, what’s going on man?” an officer asks, to which DePape responds, “Everything’s good.” The officer then says, “Drop the hammer!” and DePape says, “Uh, nope.”
Sounds of a struggle ensue. San Francisco Police Officer Kyle Cagney, who had taken the stand, said that is when he and his partner tackled DePape and Paul Pelosi fell facedown to the ground, unconscious and in a pool of blood.
“Backup code 3! Give me your f***ing hands! Give me your f***ing hands!” an officer in the audio says before the video ends.
DePape allegedly broke into the Pelosi home and confronted Paul Pelosi while he was sleeping. He allegedly asked, “Where is Nancy?” and told Paul Pelosi he would break “her kneecaps” if the speaker did not tell him the “truth,” but let her go if she did. At one point, Paul Pelosi was able to make a call to 911, which led to the visit by police.
DePape told authorities he was on a “suicide mission” seeking out other politicians, according to court documents. His friends say he has a history of drug abuse, mental illness, and believing conspiracy theories.
DePape, who remains held without bail, was wearing an orange jumpsuit at the hearing Wednesday. The preliminary hearing, during which prosecutors also presented the hammer allegedly used in the attack and played audio of the 911 call, set the stage for the judge to decide whether there is enough evidence to put DePape on trial.
At the hearing, San Francisco Police Department Lt. Carla Hurley testified that DePape disclosed that he also planned to kidnap President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, to talk about “all the corruption” in Washington, Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA), actor Tom Hanks, and feminist author Gale Breen.
After the attack, Paul Pelosi was sent to a hospital to receive treatment for a skull fracture and injuries to his right arm and hands, according to a spokesperson for his wife. Paul Pelosi was released from the hospital roughly a week after the assault, and made his first public appearance after the attack at the Kennedy Center Honors earlier this month.
