On Thursday, Governor Hochul declared a State of Emergency in New York. The New York National Guard was deployed to support search and rescue and storm response missions. The Governor enlisted additional state agency personnel and assets to help with the emergency response. On Christmas Eve, the State Police Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services and the National Guard joined local public safety officers and utility crews to create strike teams that focus on safety and life checks in Buffalo. They spent Christmas day helping with power restoration and heavy snow removal.
Snow will persist in Western New York, the North Country and North Country until Monday. The wind gusts can reach 30-40 mph. Governor Hochul asked New Yorkers not to travel outside and to adhere to local travel bans.
“We continue to work around the clock with local leaders to respond to this historic storm and are in contact with the White House to secure critical federal assistance to help our communities recover,” Governor Hochul. “I encourage everyone to continue to look after one another, stay off the roads and take precautions to stay safe in your home.”
Peak wind gusts exceeded 100 mph in Central New York, Finger Lakes, North County and North County.
