Four Washington Substations Leave Thousands Without Power after Christmas

Four power Substations Washington State were targeted Christmas dayMany people are now without electricity.

According to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department the first three locations were forcibly entered and all four vandalized. 14,000 people were affected as a result.

The first incident took place At 2:39 a.m., at a Puget sound Energy facility. The authorities weren’t notified until 11 :25 a.m. Police were alerted at 5:26 A.M. to a burglary at Tacoma Public Utilities Substation. Later, police were alerted to another attack on the TPU Substation.

The department was not notified until 7:21 p.m. call Concerning a fire at Kapowsin Substation. Authorities said that it was not known how many other customers were affected by the outage, but they did say that there were approximately 50,000. “power was knocked out for homes in Kapowsin and Graham.” Vandalism to equipment caused the fire to start.

According to police, power has been restored to the majority of affected homes.

Authorities have not taken any suspects into custody in connection with the burglaries. They are asking for people to report any suspicious activity near power lines or persons who may be at risk.

A 2022 report by the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis revealed that some domestic extremists “have developed credible, specific plans to attack electricity infrastructure since at least 2020.”

The report further states that people “adhering to a range of ideologies will likely continue to plot and encourage physical attacks against electrical infrastructure.”
