New Orleans Crime
New Orleans has already reported 277 killings so far this year. That’s the highest number since 1996. Jeff Asher (crime data analyst) says New Orleans will have America’s highest homicide rate by 2022. This year also saw 37 deaths of women, the highest number since 1996.
In interview With 4WWL Misty Frye, Director Client Services at the New Orleans Family Justice Center, stated that they were in a “crisis mode” Violence against women is getting more severe.
“What you would normally see is the slap, kick, punch, has now turned into gunshots, using vehicles to run you over. It’s happening more often than it used to. We used to go months before seeing a gunshot victim. Now, we can get five in a week. That’s a lot,” Frye stated.
The rise in crime rates can be attributed to COVID-19, inflation and the state of the country’s economy. Frye warned that if citizens don’t come together to discuss the problem, it could become worse.
How to Deal with Crime
New Orleans Mayor Democrat LaToya Catrell, a Democrat, is under intense scrutiny for her inability to control crime in the area. Since 1872, all New Orleans mayors have been Democrats. Eileen Carter is leading a recall campaign against Cantrell. She insists that Cantrell is not fit to lead the region.
“The city is her responsibility … drive around the city … read the crime stats … the condition of the city has nothing to do with being a black woman & everything to do with her poor leadership & skill set … she IS NOT the woman for this hour to help NOLA … unfortunately,” Carter said In a Dec. 29 tweet. NOLA is New Orleans, Louisiana.
New Orleans averaged two shooting incidents per year. Gunfire was responsible for almost all of the deaths in the city. The only way to kill 17 people was by beatings and stabbings.
A mere third of murders resulted in arrests.
While violence has decreased in many places over the past year, New Orleans has seen an almost 20% increase in homicides.
