McCarthy Wants to Adjourn the House Until Thursday
sponsored:
Wednesday marks the second day of the 118th Congress and there is still no Speaker of the House — or a clear path forward.
Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R.Calif.), failed to get the required 218 votes Tuesday on three consecutive ballots to secure the gavel.
It’s been a century since the House required more than one vote elect a Speaker.
McCarthy is working hard to reach a deal. On Tuesday night, he presented a route to victory that required less than 218 votes. However, many of his adversaries are still digging in.
Although the House is scheduled to start its fourth round of voting to elect a Speaker at noon, reports have emerged that McCarthy wants to adjourn until Thursday while he struggles with securing votes.
It’s unclear if he would have the votes to adjourn.
