James Gunn Responds to Rumor That He Already Selected New Superman Actor
James Gunn, DC Studios Head, responded recently to a rumor that he had already selected an actor to play Superman for his upcoming film.
Gunn had previously stated that a Superman film solo was on his initial list of films for the upcoming DC Comics projects.
He shared his thoughts via Twitter. “Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.”
He claimed that the film would be about an “earlier part of Superman’s life,” One Twitter user was also informed by him that it wouldn’t make an origin story.
In response to a user interpreting Gunn’s statement as an origin story, he responded, “Also as I said yesterday, I am definitely not doing an origin story.”
A month later, an anonymous rumor was published on Instagram by Hollywood gossip site Deuxmoi. “A certain Australian actor that was on a Netflix romcom trilogy and is currently on an HBO teen show is being looked at for the role of the new Man of Steel.”
Social media users deduced the anonymous actor in question might be Jacob Elordi, who currently plays Nate Jacobs on HBO’s Euphoria. The rumor spread to a Superman fanpage on Twitter.

They tweeted “Jacob Elordi is rumored to be James Gunn’s Superman for the DCU.”
Gunn responded on Twitter to the rumor. “My thoughts are no one has been cast as Superman yet. Casting, as is almost always the case with me, will happen after the script is finished or close to finished, and it isn’t.”
He continued, “We’ll announce a few things in not too long, but the casting of Superman won’t be one of them.”
Gunn had previously stated that he would update the DCU slate “at the beginning of the new year.”
He updated his Twitter followers. “Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year.”
Scooper Syl Abdul recently stated that he was informed that none of Gunn’s slate is currently slated to go into production this year. He did note, however, “Maybe Gunn is hiding that and that’s why it’s not leaking out.”
He then went on to analyze, “It could be possible when Gunn mentions the first couple projects that it would be DC series, TV shows, or something like that to tide us over until he’s ready to make that Superman film.”
“In fact, I was told not to expect any like new DCU productions, to not expect any of these to start production until the end of 2023 or early 2024,” He said. “So, if you don’t start anything new in production until the beginning of 2024 then you’re not seeing any new projects to come out until 2025.”
