Small Upstate NY Town Faces Wave of “Migrants”

By this point, most of us have heard the phrase, ‘Every town is now a border town‘ because of the ongoing Biden border crisis. People often think of cities like Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City as places where thousands of migrants live in tents and on the streets. These are not cities. “towns.” What happens when illegal immigrants arrive in a city? Jamestown, New York, population 28,000, is approximately six hours from New York’s Big Apple. It is located just outside of the Ohio border. are starting to find out. Residents of this small village learned recently that up to 35 illegal migrants from Colombia had settled in their community. More are likely to arrive soon. (NY Post)

In this small town — about as far as one can get from the southern border without entering Canada — residents are bracing for an influx of migrants that could cause a crisis similar to the one that has New York City Faced with a fiscal cliff

“If a city of 8 million people can be overwhelmed by a couple thousand migrants, imagine what a couple hundred can do to overwhelm a small rural community upstate?” Sen. Joe Borrello (R – Jamestown) has been warned.

“It wouldn’t take many migrants to overwhelm the system,” He added.

I’ve been to or traveled through Jamestown many times over the years because it sits on the primary interstate leading to Ohio. It’s one of those “don’t blink or you’ll miss it” These communities are scattered throughout the upstate region. They had their own homelessness problems before the border crisis. They are Phil, Mark, or Judy. But aside from a couple of churches, there really aren’t any large-scale shelters or free food outlets in Jamestown.

Ten migrants have taken over a three-bedroom townhouse. Although the conditions are difficult, some local charities have helped a few of them get jobs at local thrift stores and other shops. That situation won’t hold for long, however, particularly if a lot more of them start showing up. It’s also worth pointing out that Jamestown is in upstate New York and they get Winter is real there. This morning, the temperature was 17 degrees as the sun rose. It can be fatal to sleep outside.

Why did Jamestown become the preferred destination for Colombian migrants, even though it is not listed on any maps? Some migrants spoke through translators to describe the experience as a game of telephone. One family of migrants found a relative in Jamestown and offered to let them stay. The news that one family had a few extra rooms quickly spread down the grapevine. It was soon picked up by the migrant camps near the border. ‘Jamestown is the place to go for resettlement.’

This was it. Soon, when asked about their travel plans, more Colombians answered that they needed transportation to New York City. The migrants are now being shipped by border officials, who are relieved. Anywhere so they didn’t ask any questions. Many more are reportedly on their way.

The locals are anxious about the future. Already, some people are selling fake Social Security Cards and Licenses to some of these individuals. People who cannot find legal work have taken up drug sales. As is the case with many communities that have large numbers of illegal migrants and homeless, crime rates rise as more people are added to the ranks. Jamestown boasts a total of 60 police officers There are less than a dozen patrol vehicles. They are not allowed to leave their village if a crime wave occurs.

The village council shouldn’t expect any federal aid from Washington to deal with this mess. The White House has bigger fish to fry and a little town like this won’t generate enough headlines to spur the government to act. It would be incongruous to provide housing and services for hundreds upon hundreds of immigrants living in Jamestown. It would be to stop migrants from coming to the country looking for a home.
