Tabulation errors were made in Monmouth County, where Steve Clayton was initially victorious over Jeffrey Weinstein by 20 votes. Weinstein actually won the race by one vote, according to the new tally.
The Board of Elections was investigating an alleged problem during the election and discovered the errors. according The New Jersey Globe
Clayton, who was elected to the board in January, said that he would let the process take its course. “I will let the process play itself out,” He stated. “I’m laser-focused on what the voters sent me to do.”
In the initial count, Clayton had 3,523 votes in comparison to Weinstein’s 3,503. Monmouth County’s voting machine vendor, Election Systems and Software (ES&S) has reportedly “acknowledged” According to the Globe, this was a mistake in their system.
ES&S scans the ballots of election candidates in over 30 New Jersey counties and counts them. Although the errors could alter vote totals at Belmar, Fair Haven and Tinton Falls they are unlikely that any race will be flipped by them,
Jeff Parrott, Sussex County Clerk, said that he was “disappointed” that the state’s attorney general’s office has not notified him or any other clerks of the errors discovered in Monmouth County.
“Nobody has brought it to my attention. I’m disappointed and dismayed,” Parrott said. “It’s unacceptable to me.”
Clayton, who was previously the school board president, won the race by only 25 votes. Mail-in ballots were not counted.
“I will wait for all remaining ballots to be counted,” Clayton spoke at the time. “I am very grateful for all the support I received, and if my lead holds, I look forward to working with my fellow board members on behalf of our students.”
