Jim Harbaugh Will Return as Michigan Football Coach
Jan. 17 (UPI) — Jim Harbaugh will stay on as the head football coach at Michigan, despite rumors that he could move to the NFL, school president Santa Ono announced on Twitter.
“I just got off the phone with coach Harbaugh and Jim shared with me the great news that he is going to remain as the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines,” Ono tweeted Monday night. “That is fantastic news that I have communicated to our athletic director Warde Manuel. Go Blue!”
Harbaugh led the Wolverines’ 74-25 record in the eight previous seasons. Last February, Harbaugh signed a $36.7 million contract for a five-year deal with the Wolverines.
“I love the relationships that I have at Michigan — coaches, staff, families, administration, president Santa Ono and especially the players and their families,” Harbaugh stated in a statement. “My heart is at the University of Michigan.
“I once heard a wise man say, ‘Don’t try to out-happy, happy.’ Go Blue!”
Harbaugh was interviewed by several NFL teams in the past two seasons but decided to stay in Ann Arbor, Mich. He was linked to both the Minnesota Vikings and the Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, and Denver Broncos last off-season.
Harbaugh was a quarterback in the NFL between 1987 and 2000. He also played at Michigan from 1983 to 1986.
From 2011 to 2014, he was the San Francisco 49ers’ coach and posted a record of 44-19-1. He was San Diego’s head coach from 2004 to 2006 and Stanford from 2007 to 2010. In 2002 and 2003, he was also the Raiders’ quarterbacks coach. Harbaugh served as an assistant coach at Western Kentucky between 1994 and 2001.
The Wolverines were 13-1 and ranked No. The Wolverines were ranked No. 2 in the 2022-23 College Football Playoff rankings. Their 13 wins set a single-season school record. Harbaugh’s guidance has left the Wolverines just 1-6 in bowl games, with their 51-45 defeat to No. 3 TCU in Fiesta Bowl, one the two College Football Playoff semifinals.
