Virginia Republicans Shoot Down Gun Control Measures
Virginia House Republicans defeated a number of gun-storage bills and bans that would have placed restrictions on firearms on college campuses.
Thursday night’s votes are a reminder that there is major action gun laws This is because of the split control of the General Assembly.
A House Public Safety subcommittee voted 6-4 to defeat a Democratic Del bill. Dan Helmer, who would have expanded definitions of “assault firearm” This ban prohibits the import, sale and transfer of, as well as manufacture, purchase, and transport of such guns.
Another Democratic Del. proposal was rejected by the subcommittee. Sally Hudson (Charlottesville) represented the bill that would have made it illegal to carry a firearm inside any building owned or operated under the auspices of a public institution higher education.
Virginia colleges already prohibit weapons in their administrative processes. But those policies don’t include the prohibition of weapons. “full force of law” Hudson stated that Hudson was referring to law enforcement as being unable to enforce the laws.
Similar bills have been introduced in the Democrat-controlled Senate. The University of Virginia’s police chief has supported both measures. In November, three football players were killed and two more were injured in a shooting on campus. Hudson stated that the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police also supported the measure.
Representatives from the Virginia Citizens Defense League (Va. NRA) spoke out against the bill.

“It creates a new gun-free zone without doing enough to protect and secure the facilities that we’re talking about,” D.J. Spiker, lobbyist for NRA.
The bill was also rejected 6-4.
A bill to tighten gun storage requirements was also rejected by the panel. Del. Marcus Simon, the bill’s sponsor, invoked the case of a 6-year-old Newport News student who police say shot his teacher when explaining why he thinks the bill is necessary.

The Virginia Citizens Defense League Simon’s bill was also opposed to NRA.
This subcommittee also supported gun rights groups and recommended measures that were likely to be defeated by the Senate. Del. Dave LaRock proposed to reduce the power of localities to ban guns from certain public areas, such as parks or community centers.
