DC Suddenly Realizes Migrant Crisis Is a Crisis, Asks Federal Govt for Help
SSince April of last year, Republican governors bussed thousands upon thousands of immigrants. Washington, D.C.The city still struggles to absorb the large influx of non-citizens.
Some of the immigrants prefer to stay put in the city and not move on to other places. This raises capacity issues for the local government. There are larger issues around immigration policy The United States.
Phil Mendelson (D), Chairman of the D.C. Council, stated that the city was required to host large numbers of immigrants in a short time span without having any existing infrastructure.

“Most of the migrants, my sense is somewhere around 90%, move on. They have someplace else they want to go. We have been sorely burdened by the roughly 10% who don’t have another place to go,” Mendelson stated.
“We are doing our best to step up with services, to help them, to house them, to feed them, and whatever else they need. And, you know, we’re willing to do that, but it is very stressful on us,” He concluded.
Washington was home to an average of 300 immigrants each day in September. However, according to the city of El Paso, Texas’s WebsiteIn El Paso, up to 1,000 immigrants were released each day in the same month.
Gov. Greg Abbott (R.TX), said in a Statement Texas will “continue sending migrants to sanctuary cities like D.C. until Pres. Biden & Border Czar Harris step up & do their jobs to secure the border.”
The governor Texas is a border country, but it doesn’t have the resources to deal with the large influx of immigrant refugees that are frequently released into the border states.
Governor Ron DeSantis, a former governor of Arizona (R-FL), and Ron DeSantis. Doug Ducey Citation Similar reasoning was used when buses were also sent to refugee cities across the country.
Mendelson calls bussing, in contrast “inhumane” He also stressed that Washington doesn’t have the resources to support such a large number of immigrants as El Paso.
“I don’t want to say that this is easy on the border states. … However, they are border states. So the challenge is natural to them because they are border states. We’re not a border state. This is being dropped on us by these governors,” He said.
Local leaders in Washington also voiced concern about bussing. Brooke Pinto (D), D.C. Councilwoman, raised humanitarian concerns last year. Republican governors used human beings “political stunts,” Muriel Bowser (D), Washington Mayor Claim Many immigrants boarded buses with false pretenses.
Officials on both sides agree that the federal government must intervene to resolve the border crisis.
“Mayors do a lot of things, but we are not responsible for a broken immigration system. What we need in this country is we need the Congress to do its job and fix this immigration system,” Bowser stated.
In September, The D.C. Council voted to approve the Migrant Services and Supports: Emergency Act of 2022, which supported Bowser’s declaration of a public emergency in response to the migrant crisis and established the Office of Migrant Services.
While the office is not operational yet, Bowser anticipates it to be open Monday. Nominated Tatiana Laborde, the former managing director at SAMU First Response, an organization that serves immigrants in the district is now the director for migrant services.
However, there are still concerns within the community. SanctuaryDMV and other local migrant aid groups spoke out. Against The Office of Migrant Services was established because the new directives don’t offer enough protection to immigrants.
There is controversy surrounding the announcement of the new law. LegislationThe district will not offer citizenship to immigrants. It will not offer the same opportunity to immigrant immigrants. Services Advocates say that Washington’s unhoused residents may not be able to get shelter or healthcare.
Both Washington officials and Republican governors have made it clear they cannot afford to pay the bills to feed, clothe, and shelter thousands of immigrants.
Although both jurisdictions received reimbursement grants from federal government for services rendered to immigrants, city leaders expressed their need for more.
“We’ve gotten some assistance from the Department of Homeland Security. I don’t think it’s enough,” Mendelson stated.
The newly passed Omnibus Funding Bill transferred $800 Million to the Federal Emergency Management Agency in order to create a new DHS Grant Program, the Shelter and Services Program. The SSP will assist cities affected by an influx of migrants.
