George Santos Releases Statement On Stepping Down From Committee Assignments
Rep. George Santos (R.NY) stated Tuesday in a statement that he asked that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-CA, remove him from his committee assignments. There are several criminal investigations underway into him.
Federal and local authorities are investigating the freshman congressman who admitted to lying about certain aspects of his personal and professional life.
“With the ongoing attention surrounding both my personal and campaign financial investigations, I have submitted a request to Speaker McCarthy that I be temporarily recused from my committee assignments until I am cleared,” Santos made the statement in a statement. “This was a decision that I take very seriously.”
“The business of the 118th Congress must continue without media fanfare,” He went on. “It is important that I primarily focus on serving the constituents of New York’s Third Congressional District and providing federal level representation without distraction.”
McCarthy was thanked for meeting Santos and for allowing him time to take his assignments from his committee. Santos stated that he was going back to “clear” His name.
“To my constituents, I remain committed to serving the district, and delivering results for both New York’s Third Congressional District and for the American people,” Santos said.
Santos has already admitted He admitted to lying about his work at Citigroup and Goldman Sachs, as well as that he didn’t graduate from college. Santos also admitted that he exaggerated some details about his personal life, religion and sexuality.
The New York Times reported This month, law enforcement officials in Brazil were informed that they would be moving to Brazil earlier this month “intend to revive fraud charges” Santos is being held responsible for an incident in 2008 where a checkbook was allegedly stolen.
According to the report, the case was suspended as law enforcement couldn’t find him. Brazilian prosecutors will now request that the Department of Justice notify Santos of these charges.
According to the report, Santos, then 19, went into a small store to buy clothing and spent $700. He used a stolen checkbook, and a false name. The fraud was allegedly confessed by Santos on a Brazilian social networking site the next year.
According to the report, he and his mother admitted to police that they had stolen the checkbook in order to make fraudulent purchases. Santos was convicted of the charges in 2010. However, Santos had already fled the country and was now living in the U.S.
The report stated that neither the U.S. nor Brazilian officials could get Santos to reply at this point. But, this could change if the case goes forward. Santos could spend up to half a century in prison if convicted.
