Kamala Harris Calls On Congress To Pass Policing Reform At Tyre Nichols’ Funeral
Vice President Kamala Harris On Wednesday, the Congress was urged to adopt broad police reforms.
Harris did this as she gave remarks at Tyre Nicks’ funeral. This video shows that Tyre was brutally beaten by Memphis police officers last month.
Harris advocated for the particular. George Floyd Justice In Policing ActThe House passed the legislation in March 2021. But, the Senate failed to approve it due to Republican opposition. Harris stated that she was a coauthor of the original legislation during her time as a senator.
“As vice president of the United States, we demand that Congress pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act,” Harris exclaimed to cheers. Before saying anything, she added that President Joe Biden would sign the bill. “We should not delay and we will not be denied. It is nonnegotiable.”

The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act seeks to ban chokeholds, limit no-knock enters and overhaul qualified immunity. It was named after George Floyd who died in May 2020, after a Minneapolis officer bent over on his back during an arrest.
While bystander video of Floyd’s arrest led to a summer of protests and riots across the country, it was body camera and surveillance video of Memphis officers punching and kicking Nichols that led to a fresh outcry over police brutality. The beating was a result of an attempted arrest for a traffic stop for reckless driving. Assassinated Their SCORPION unit Disbanded.
The black community in particular has felt the weight of these tragedies, as Floyd and Nichols were black men. Although the officers charged in Nichols’ death were all black, activists have taken to blaming “systematic racism.”
Democrats in Congress, including the Congressional Black CaucusThey have started a new push to persuade the White House to lead the effort to reform federal police forces. Although there has been bipartisan support, in particular for the changes made in Talks by Sen. Tim Scott (R. SC)With the new Republican majority in Congress, it is still to be seen just how far Congress will go.

Rev. Harris was also present. Al Sharpton and others at the Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church for Nichols’ funeral.
“This violent act was not in pursuit of public safety. It was not in the interest of keeping the public safe, because one must ask, was not it in the interest of keeping the public safe that Tyre Nichols would be with us today?” Harris said. “Was he not also entitled to the right to be safe?”
