Tim Graham: This Just In: Journalistic Objectivity Is Obliterated
Establishment media has shuffled forward to announce their lack of objectivity. It’s as if Jack Benny was just announced dead. It isn’t “news.”
The announcer was Leonard Downie Jr., a former Washington Post executive editor. He stated that he and Andrew Heyward, former CBS News president, had surveyed 75 sources within the media elites to find a consensus. “generational shift.” Voila! No one is objective anymore.
The headline is “Newsrooms that move beyond ‘objectivity’ can build trust.” Objectivity is always in scare quotes, because it was always corrupt according to this white male.
Today’s journalists “point out that the standard was dictated over decades by male editors in predominantly White newsrooms and reinforced their own view of the world. They believe that pursuing objectivity can lead to false balance or misleading ‘bothsidesism’ in covering stories about race, the treatment of women, LGBTQ+ rights, income inequality, climate change and many other subjects.”
People who hate “bothsidesism” Are fervent believers in “onesideism,” They will enforce the media rule that there should not be any space or respect for the “wrong side” LGBTQ+ and climate change “Black Lives Matter,” So on and so forth. There is no Right or Left, but there is only Right and Wrong.
Young journalists can now be published as the norm. “marginalized” Identity to steer the “news gathering” Functions, using their “lived experiences.” This means that they feel the need to be loved. “personal safety” trump all facts. This is evident in the way The New York Times fired James Bennet, editorial page editor, after he published an op-ed written by Sen. Tom Cotton (R.Ark.). It was suggested that troops could be used in cities to stop violent rioting.
Young journalists have been coddled by the media elites, who allow them to be theirs. “genuine selves” Participate in protests on the issues that they are covering. They ridiculy identify themselves as “the” “mainstream” They veer ever further leftward.
Downie laments Old Media “coping with economic and digital disruption” And “increasing competition from misinformation on cable television and the internet.” This is how it works “mainstream” media define the conservative media — they are bluntly categorized as “misinformation” This is affecting their market share.
It is obvious that if you make everyone aware of your pain, you will be able to avoid. “false balance” Exclude the “wrong side” From your “news” stories — unless you’re destroying them and their favorite leaders — the “wrong side” Goes out to find journalism that addresses their concerns.
Downie suggests, strangely, that the media restore trust by being more open about their operations “newsgathering decisions”: “When possible, they should hire or designate an editor to field and act on reader complaints and questions.” But The Washington Post and The New York Times dumped their editors who act on reader complaints — The Post in 2013, The Times in 2017.
They also mock transparency daily as they wage war against politicians they don’t like by endlessly exploiting anonymous source, hiding behind the wall of anonymity, and waging war on politicians they do not like. “people familiar with the investigation.” They boast they are “the best” “protect democracy,” They’ve squashed public discussion.
This is why Downie’s headline is so bizarre. Public trust in the media has fallen as they have progressively abandoned objectivity. Gallup revealed that only 34% Americans trust the mass media to deliver the news. “fully, accurately and fairly,” 70% of Democrats trust them.
Earth to the media “wrong side” You were not worthy of your attention and received the suspicion that you desired. Serve the only ones who are profitable. “marginalized.”
