Nets Trade Kyrie Irving to Mavericks

Kyrie Irving’s trade request has reportedly been fulfilled.

The Brooklyn Nets Multiple reports claim that the Dallas Mavericks are sending the polarizing point-guard to them in exchange for Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney Smith, and multiple second-rounders.

Irving sought a trade just days after he was named All-Star starter for Eastern Conference. Irving said if he wasn’t traded, he would become a free agent and a report also stated he might sit the rest of the season.

Now, Irving will team up with another highly talented guard: Mavericks’ superstar Luka Doncic.

Brooklyn reported that Irving would be out of the team until a trade was made. He sat out Saturday night’s win over the Washington Wizards The team stated that he was experiencing right calf pains.

The Nets fans were clearly upset that Irving demanded a trade as Irving’s image was displayed on the Jumbotron at Barclays Center prior to the game. There were also boos from the crowd.

Irving now heads to a Dallas team that sits sixth in the Western Conference standings at 28-26, lower than the Nets’ 32-20 record and current fourth seed in the East. However, Irving and Doncic will create problems for the West over the next weeks.

Doncic is just barely second in the league in points per game with 33.4 behind Joel Embiid’s 33.5 with the Philadelphia 76ers. But Doncic isn’t selfish with the ball as we’ve seen with his 8.2 assists per game, so Irving, who is averaging 27.1 points per contest to earn himself an All-Star Game starter nod, will be getting the ball.

Now the question is whether Irving will be granted a contract extension by the Mavericks. According to ESPN, he wants it to be for a four-year period at $198.5 million. This was a major issue in the breakup of talks with Nets.

Other destinations that were rumored to be interested in Irving’s services included the Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers as well as Phoenix Suns, Miami Heat, and Phoenix Suns.

Brooklyn was enjoying a great time with Irving signing together with Durant to join them before 2019-2020 season. It was believed that this was the start to a long and successful relationship that would lead to NBA titles. This marriage was fraught with controversy and injuries, particularly when Irving was involved.

For posting a link on Amazon to antisemitic disinformation, he was expelled from eight games. After completing a checklist, he was reportedly unapologetic at first and was eventually allowed back to the team.

Then, there was his decision to forego the COVID-19 vaccination, which led to him playing only 29 games for the Nets last season as he couldn’t play at home due to New York City restrictions.

Irving also missed significant time in 2020-21 due to civil unrest, but he was still named All-Star that year.

Irving’s four years in Brooklyn saw him average 27.1 points per contest, which is the most with any team. He also had 3.4 rebounds as well as 5.5 assists during 143 regular-season games.

While Irving was in Brooklyn, the Nets reached the Eastern Conference seminfinals against the Milwaukee Bucks in 2021. They ended up losing in seven games, though Irving didn’t play the final three due to injury.

Last season, the Nets lost to the Boston Celtics with a clean sweep.

Dallas was able to trade two starters, Finney-Smith and Dinwiddie, in this deal. Dinwiddie is the most prominent player due to his experience in Brooklyn.

Fans loved Dinwiddie’s progression into a true scoring threat, especially from 2018-2020. Dinwiddie averaged 20.6 points per game, a career-high, in the 2019-2020 campaign, which was Irving and Kevin Durant’s first season in Brooklyn (Durant was out with an Achillies injury that entire year, though).

Dinwiddie finally signed with the Washington Wizards from 2021-22, after only playing three games in 2020 as a result of an ACL Injury. His three-year contract with the Wizards lasted 44 games. He was traded to the Mavericks in that season.

This year, he’s averaging 17.7 points over 34.1 minutes per game.
