Trial Date Set For Real Estate Heir Accused Of Murdering Mother, WWII-Hero Grandpa For Inheritance
A Vermont Real estate heir accused Killing This October, his grandfather and mother will be on trial for heirlooming millions.
Nathan Carman (29), is charged with shooting and killing John Chakalos, a former Army paratrooper who was also a self-made millionaire. reported. Carman allegedly murdered his grandfather to collect $550,000 from a family trust fund. This money he reportedly spent in three years.
Prosecutors allege that Carman, who was short of money, took Linda, his mother, on his boat in 2016 to collect $85,000 in insurance money.
Carman’s trial is set for October 2 and is expected to last for more than two weeks.
The Carman indictment was unveiled in May 2022. It accused Carman of murdering his mother in September 2016, while on a boating trip, and then lying to the authorities. Although the indictment doesn’t explain Carman’s alleged murder of his mother, it does state that he intentionally sank the boat they were on that day. Carman spent eighteen days on a liferaft after his boat sank, before being found by a commercial fisherman.
Carman was rescued from the sinking boat in 2016. Telled The Associated Press reported that he attempted to find his mother after the ship began sinking. Chakalos divvied up his $42 million estate between his four adult daughters, one of whom was Carman’s mother. Carman’s three aunts filed a lawsuit in 2018 in which they accused him of killing his grandfather and possibly his mother in order to gain the money. They requested a judge to stop Carman’s inheritance.
Carman is facing eight criminal charges including the murder of his mother and seven related to his alleged attempts at obtaining his inheritance. He faces life imprisonment if he is convicted. For each fraud case, he faces up to 30 year imprisonment.
